Disk Golf : An Overview
Disc golf started as one of the offshoots of Frisbee®. It has been played first with Frisbees, which made use of trash cans, pipes, light poles or even trees as target. The game’s main objective is to cross the course from start to end with the least number of disc throws.
It was in 1960 when modern disk golf was played. However it is believed to have been invented by many people in different places separately. Two people who have shared their contribution to this sport are George Sappenfield and “Steady ED” Headrick. Sappenfield introduced playing “golf” with Frisbee and initiated to popularize the game by setting up a tournament while Headrick formulated the chain and basket as the disk golf target. He was also the one who created the term Disc Golf and established the first association, PDGA, in 1975.

This sport is played on a course designed with tee signs and pads and tonal poles and disc pole holes. It does not make use of golf clubs and balls to aim for a hole but instead it uses golf discs that are eight to nine inches in diameter and weighs 150 to 180 grams. It shoots at a pole called Disc Pole Hole that serves as a catcher and is made of steel basket with a hanging chain on it. The tonal pole becomes the target. The noise created by the pole when the disc hits the tonal pole is an indication that the disc has been trapped by the chains. Each course has 9, 18 or 24 holes with 150 to 500 feet each and is equipped with a tee pad for a solid start on tee off. These tees are made of rotten granite, blocks of concrete or rubber pads. One tee is usually next to the target for a more competitive play, just like in the traditional golf.
Today, disk golf is considered one of the best fitness sports. It is fun, easy to play and provides a healthy level of activity for people of all ages. The Professional Disc Golf Association has already earned 24, 000 members since its establishment in 1976 and exhibits 390 World Championship and tournaments every year. About 7-10 million people have already played this game in over 3,000 disc golf courses in the US. It has been popularized from small towns to the city and continues to gain a growing demand for courses over the years.
